Three projects that have helped cut crime and improve the quality of life for residents have made it through to the final of the prestigious Home Office Tilley Awards.
The awards, now in its ninth year, were set up to encourage and recognise excellence in crime reduction using problem-orientated policing (POP) principles.
The three shortlisted entries are the Quinton E.S.C.A.P.E project from Staffordshire Police, which used a partnership approach to reduce crime and disorder and make the area cleaner and safer for the community and businesses; a project run by the Safer Hastings Partnership in Sussex to tackle the fear of crime and a project in Preston, Lancashire to improve life on the Farringdon Park estate which is within the top ten per cent of deprived communities in England.
There were nine other entries shortlisted for this years awards which included a project to cut anti-social behaviour by youths in Bethnal Green and a student burglary reduction initiative in Manchester.
The winners of this years award will be announced at the UK POP conference in Birmingham in September. They will be given financial assistance to enable them to attend and present their project at the International POP Conference in the US in the Autumn. The prize awards this year are £2,500, £2,000 and £1,500.
The awards were named after Professor Nick Tilley of Nottingham Trent University who has developed POP in the UK. They are funded by the Home Office Crime Reduction and Community Safety Directorate.
