Force rated as 'good' at tackling serious and organised crime
South Yorkshire Police has been rated as ‘good’ at tackling serious and organised crime (SOC) in a new inspection report released today (December 18).
The rating from His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) follows an inspection of the response to SOC in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
HMIC recognised a number of areas of good work, which is carried out under the force’s Operation Fortify. Areas highlighted for recognition include our activity to crack down on organised crime in prisons, our partnership working and our successful pilot of the Clear Hold Build model to rid local communities of gangs, and ensure they stay out.
Comparing 2025 to 2024, ‘Most Serious Violence’ offences in South Yorkshire have reduced by 19 per cent (242), and our recovery of illegally held firearms has increased by 95 per cent (23). Firearms discharges are currently at a five year low.
Assistant Chief Constable Hayley Barnett said: “I am pleased the unwavering hard work of our dedicated officers and staff to tackle organised crime within our communities in South Yorkshire has been recognised by HMICFRS, and that we have seen meaningful reductions in offending.
“However, there is still too much violence on our streets and also too many illegal firearms. In recent weeks alone, there have been a number of firearms discharges on our streets. These incidents put the public at risk of injury or worse. Two incidents have endangered children, one of whom is in a critical condition.
“As we look ahead to 2026, it is my commitment to our communities that we will build upon this good work. We will remain steadfastly determined to bring those involved in organised crime to justice and ensure South Yorkshire remains a safe and thriving place to live, work and visit.
“Information and intelligence from our communities is a key component in tackling serious and organised crime. If you know something about crime in your area, or even have suspicions, please share them with us or, anonymously, with Crimestoppers.”
All four Yorkshire forces, and the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit (YHROCU) have received two areas for improvement (AFIs) from HMICFRS – relating to how they work together to tackle serious and organised crime, and how the region procures and uses technical surveillance equipment.
