Chief Constable Dee Collins has confirmed the appointment of her deputy at West Yorkshire Police. John Robins’ post as deputy chief constable was made permanent on Friday (January 27) after he was appointed the temporary role three years ago. Ms Collins said: “I am delighted to welcome John as my deputy on a permanent basis. “He shares my vision for the future and I am sure he will continue to make a positive difference to the organisation and to the public we serve.” Mr Robins has served his entire career with West Yorkshire Police having joined in 1990 and worked his way through the ranks. For many years, he was a nationally trained hostage negotiator, dealing with a number of sieges, suicide interventions and kidnaps. In 2003, Mr Robins was posted to Bradford as superintendent, and was promoted three years later to chief superintendent, overseeing criminal justice. He became an assistant chief constable in 2012, taking the lead on workforce, development and standards, and later took charge of local policing across the western side of the force. In 2014, he was appointed temporary deputy chief constable, leading on professional standards, ethics and equality. Mr Robins said: “I am extremely pleased and look forward to ensuring we continue to develop and grow as a professional, people focused organisation. “I am sure there are some challenging times ahead, but I am confident we have the people and the plans in place to meet those challenges.”
