Inspector Mark Estall was on duty at the Boreham base on Thursday (January 5) when he was taken ill.
Ambulance crews were called to the site at 7.25pm but despite their best efforts, Insp Estall passed away at the scene.
Flags across the county are being flown at half-mast in respect to the officer, who had served with the force for almost three decades.
The circumstances of his passing are as yet unknown.
Chief Supt Rachel Nolan, head of Operational Policing Command based at Boreham, said: Essex Police has lost one of our great officers. Always professional, invariably cheerful and a highly skilled member of the force.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.
Sergeant Colin Shead, from Essex Polices Roads Policing Unit, tweeted: Lost for words and heartbroken this evening. My friend and colleague of almost 27 years has left us. So many happy memories. RIP mate.
Chief Constable Steve Kavanagh said: Last night we lost a brave and dedicated colleague. Ive spoken throughout the day with those grieving the loss of a friend and comrade.
Later today Ill join teams in Boreham in a memorial service and the prayers of all at @EssexPoliceUK are with his family and friends. RIP.
Steve Taylor, chairman of Essex Police Federation, added: The people of Essex have lost a dedicated servant and our colleagues have lost a good bloke.
