Fingerprinting to trace internet attacks

A US firm, Arbor Networks, has developed software to combat the growing problem of service attacks on websites and the relay of worms and spam around the net.

The Smart Sensing System identifies and creates a digital fingerprint of an attack and will also trace the attack back to its source.
The data gathered by the software can be used by the police to help build up intelligence about the criminals responsible for such attacks.
