Fatal collision following police chase in Staffordshire
An independent investigation has been launched after a police pursuit of a car on the wrong side of a motorway ended in the death of the driver.
The 19-year-old driver from London died in the collision on Sunday morning, while the 18-year-old female passenger remains in hospital in a stable condition. The passengers in the second car have sustained only minor injuries and were admitted to hospital as a precaution.
The collision occurred after the vehicle was being pursued for failing to stop when required by police officers.
Staffordshire Police voluntarily referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct because a number of its officers were involved prior to the incident.
Sergeant Rich Moors from the force’s Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are working with the Independent Office for Police Conduct to investigate the incident and would ask that any witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact 101 quoting incident number 177 of 15 April.
“We are particularly keen to trace any witnesses who were travelling on the eastbound (towards Uttoxeter) carriageway who witnessed the Toyota Aygo or police vehicles passing them or who have dashcam footage.”
