Unwanted pets could find a new life as working police dogs, sniffing out drugs and money.

Dogs are needed by the North Wales Police dog section after the recent retirement of a number of animals.

Sgt Gareth Crowe, of the force`s dog section, said: “People may have taken a dog on as a puppy and no longer feel able to manage it due to its drive and being hyperactive.

“Police dogs receive top quality care and attention while taking part in stimulating and rewarding work.”

The animals will be trained to become full-time police sniffer dogs, searching for money and drugs in various types of operations and warrants.

All need to be healthy working dogs, and officers are looking for dogs aged around 12 months, with plenty of drive to play.

After six weeks of training the dogs will live with their handler and be involved in a wide range of rewarding police work.

Springer spaniel and labrador breeds are preferable as they are typically used in this type of police work.

North Wales Police currently has three sniffer dogs working from the force`s dog section, whichi also includes 11 Belgian shepherds.

Sgt Crowe said : “Potential candidates will be assessed in their home environment.

“If this is successful, arrangements will be made for the dog to be brought into force for further assessments.”

Anyone interested in donating their dog should contact Sgt Crowe on 0845 607 1001 (Welsh line) 0845 607 1002 (English language line) or email him direct on Gareth.Crowe@nthwales.pnn.police.uk
