One officer was injured and three police cars damaged in disturbances in Manchester last night.

The violence is said to have been sparked by youth gathering outside a fast food takeaway in Heywood that has been linked with an ongoing court case in Liverpool.

Officers managed to disperse a group responsible for disturbances after windows were damaged at a takeaway on Bridge Street. No injuries to the public were reported but during the violence, missiles including bricks were thrown at officers and vehicles. One officer suffered bruising to his legs and arms.

The youths were said to have chanted ‘EDL’ as they left.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesman said a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and police assault. A 14-year-old boy was arrested for causing danger to a public highway.

Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney said: “Greater Manchester Police, in conjunction with its partners and communities, is aware of the tensions in the borough that have come about because of an ongoing court case in Liverpool.

“I understand that there will be concern following this evening’s events and to offer reassurance there is a significant police presence in the area this evening. We will maintain and increase police presence in the coming weeks to keep up our reassurance.”

An appeal for the community to act responsibly during this difficult time and for information has been made. Social media sites are being monitored for further signs of unrest.
