Cleveland has become the first UK force to order Avon Protection’s new wide vision C50 respirator, which has been specifically designed for firearms users. Following successful trials Cleveland has placed an order for 100 units; the C50 is also currently being trialled by several other UK forces.

Key features for Cleveland were the C50’s wide vision facility, increasing peripheral vision, and its pliability, improving overall comfort. It boasts a new faceseal with either a right or left handed filter mount to give the best possible sighting position for shoulder-mounted weapons, and the ability to cater for left handed and right handed firearms’ users.

Derek Outen of Cleveland Police Firearms Operations said: “The C50 offers the police firearms officer of today, and tomorrow, a significant improvement in overall vision, protection and comfort.”

The C50 was developed by Avon Protection to meet the needs of the first responder and military markets to protect against chemical warfare agents, radioactive dusts and biological threats. Using the latest digital design techniques and Avon’s unique rubber compounds, it has been specifically designed to improve integration with ancillary equipment.

Jim Naylor, Sales and Marketing Manager, Avon Protection, said: “We are expecting an enthusiastic response to the C50 at ACPO. The C50 offers law enforcers and first responders a highly featured mask which incorporates many of the latest technical advancements, which Avon has developed for the US JSGPM (United States Joint Service General Purpose Mask) program.
