Central Scotland Police has appointed three new chief officers.

The Central Scotland Joint Police Board last week named Derek Penman as its new chief constable following former chief constable Kevin Smith’s move to lead the restructuring of the Scottish Police Service.

The board also approved Gordon Samson’s move to the post of deputy chief constable, while Chief Superintendent Allan Moffat will take over as assistant chief constable.

Mr Penman joined Central Scotland Police as a cadet in 1982 and became a PC with the force two years later. He has since served in a number of roles throughout the service, including as the assistant chief constable of Grampian Police in June 2009. He returned to Central Scotland as deputy chief constable in January 2011.

He said: “I would like to thank the Joint Police Board for this opportunity at a time of significant change within the police service. Our aim moving forward is to be very firmly focused on delivering the best service we can for our communities. That’s something we’re very proud of as a service and something which our communities expect from us.”

The new deputy chief constable joined the force in 1984 and has also served in a number of posts, including head of professional standards and Falkirk Area Commander. He has been temporary assistant chief constable since July 2010.

Mr Moffat began his career with Grampian Police in 1983 and moved to Central Scotland Police in 1987. He was chief superintendent at the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency between 2008 and 2010 when he returned as chief superintendent of Crime and Specialist Operations.
