Northern Constabulary Chief Constable Ian Latimer will be retiring in March 2011 after 30 years’ service.

Mr Latimer joined Northern Constabulary in 2001 after serving with Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and Merseyside Police. He was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in June 2006.

The announcement of his retirement was made at the Northern Joint Police Board meeting and the board is now in the process of establishing a chief officer appointment sub-committee to select his replacement.

During his time with the force he has overseen the transfer of £1.6 million to frontline policing services from ‘back office’ departments, which allowed the force to increase its number of officers from 700 in 2008 to 800 this year.
