Chester has become Cheshire’s first ArcAngel protected city in a move designed to tackle alcohol-related crime and disorder and drive up the standards of nightlife in the city.

It marked the success of the 36 premises that are part of the ArcAngel initiative.

The launch was attended by Jenny Haken-Aspen, secretary of Pubwatch, Assistant Chief Constable Janette McCormick, Frank Marnell, chair of pubwatch, Cllr Samantha Dixon, Chester Inspector Ian Thorpe and Cllr Brian Crowe (pictured left to right).

Inspector Ian Thorpe, from Cheshire Constabulary, said: “All the premises involved have reached a minimum set of standards to be accredited with ArcAngel status. Each of the premises will have to retain these standards to stay accredited. There are still some premises that are hoping to become part of the initiative which is a positive step for driving up the standards of Chester’s nightlife.”

ArcAngel is a long-term partnership approach that involves Cheshire Constabulary, Cheshire West and Chester Council and licensees. Tackling alcohol-related problems such as anti-social behaviour is a priority for all the agencies involved, the local residents and the premises themselves. The partnership is focused on making Chester city safe for both locals and visitors to the area.

“We all have a part to play and our message is clear to anyone coming to the city, licensees are enforcing standards as are the police and council in relation to the sale of alcohol and they need to be aware that they have a part to play too. Anyone whose behaviour is considered to be breaking the standards will be dealt with accordingly, as paramount to the ArcAngel protected city status is providing a safe environment for everyone,” added Insp Thorpe.

Councillor Lynn Riley, the council’s executive member for community and environment, added: “When partnerships really work well together, initiatives like ArcAngel are the result. This really is a win-win for the city, its residents, businesses and visitors and the agencies that work hard to ensure that Chester remains one of the best cities in the UK.

“The ‘protected city’ brand identifies Chester as a great place where people can be reassured that the licensed premises they visit are well managed and regulated, safe places to enjoy a night out. The scheme is good for businesses and it’s good for the economy and I’m delighted that so many premises have already signed up and we can all look forward to a packed programme of great events over the summer months.”
