An officer from North Yorkshire Police, currently based at the Centrex Leadership Academy for Policing at Bramshill, Hampshire, has been honoured by the Gay Police Association (GPA) for a flagship training initiative.
Chief Inspector Terry Scaife was presented with the award for the best training initiative to raise the focus on gay issues nationally for his development and delivery of a critical incident training programme offered to inspectors and chief inspectors by the Centrex Leadership Academy.
The programme has been delivered on 30 occasions so far and greatly improves the polices understanding of gay issues and their duty of care.
Mr Scaife, who is currently seconded to Centrex Police Training as a tutor on the Command and Crime Team said: I was delighted to receive the award and would like to thank all the team at Bramshill who have supported me in the research, design, administration and delivery of this course. Special thanks goes to the GPA who have supported every session and continue to do so. The course has received excellent feedback and is now delivered not only within Centrex but around the country. A course is planned for North Yorkshire in early November.
Vic Codling, national coordinator for the GPA said: Candidates appreciate this refreshing new look at diversity issues alongside the management of critical incidents, the examples used throughout the course are taken from the GPAs 24 hour Action Line offering credibility to the programme.
A GPA consultant works with each programme delivery to assist facilitation of the subject. This is considered the very best example of how diversity training should be embedded into mainline police occupational development.
The award was presented at the GPAs annual dinner on September 30 at the City Chambers in Edinburgh.
