BT’s Modem Protection Programme

BT has announced new measures to protect consumers from rogue dialler scams over the internet. Rogue diallers are programmes which hijack modems and dial up a premium rate number when a user logs on. They operate without the user’s knowledge and have resulted in phone bills of up to £2,000.

The initiatives launched by BT to combat the problem include:

u BT’s Modem Protection programme. This software, available to download for free, will check numbers that are dialled by a computer and will block them if they have not been pre approved.

u An early warning system which will alert BT customers if there is unusual activity on their phone bills.

These initiatives have been available to BT customers since May.
