Barrister Mark Saunders, 32, was found dead after exchanging fire with police during a five-hour standoff at his £2.2 million flat on Tuesday.

Witnesses say the incident began when a woman, believed to be Elizabeth Saunders, his wife, fled the house shortly before shots began. Neighbour Jane Winkworth said she later had to run for her life after Mr Saunders shot at her. She then stayed in her basement flat with armed police as they attempted to negotiate the gunman’s surrender. She said the gunman threw a white cardboard box from a window with a message which read: “I love my wife dearly.”

The IPCC has confirmed that it will investigate the incident.
