Dorset will temporarily be overseen by an acting police and crime commissioner (PCC) after Martyn Underhill withdrew from the post to support his wifes recovery from a stroke.
On Wednesday (October 5), Deborah Underhill collapsed and was taken to Southampton General Hospital where she is being treated for a subarachnoid haemorrhage.
Mr Underhill will remain in post while she recovers, but current deputy Colin Pipe will be responsible for making day-to-day decisions as acting PCC until further notice.
Mr Underhill said: My wifes collapse in Wimborne Square was completely unexpected, and I would like to thank the off-duty nurse who rushed to help, the South West Ambulance crew who arrived within three minutes, and the superb team at the Wessex Neurological Unit. These professionals literally saved her life.
My wifes doctors have advised me that it is vital that I spend time supporting and helping her recovery. I have absolute confidence in Colin to act on my behalf and I thank Councillor Adams and the members of the police and crime panel for their support during a very difficult time.
Mr Pipe served the PCCs office as a special advisor before becoming the countrys first ever voluntary deputy PCC in September 2015.
He was formally appointed as a paid deputy following Mr Underhills re-election in May this year.
Mr Pipe said: I am saddened by this news and my thoughts are with Deborah and Martyn at this time.
I would like to reassure the public that, in relation to the work of the office, it is business as usual and we are continuing our work to ensure Dorset residents receive an efficient and effective police service.
Cllr John Adams, chair of the Dorset police and crime panel, added: The police and crime panel convey their sincere wishes to Deborah and Martyn in this difficult time, and their hopes for a speedy recovery.
