Lancashire Constabulary is the first police force in the UK to take delivery of the ‘greenest car in Britain’ as part of its commitment to supporting green issues and reducing its carbon footprint.

Its transport department is evaluating three of the Ford Focus ECOnetic 1.6 TDCi vehicles on its hire pool. The vehicles will be used for journeys both within the county and across the country.

These vehicles have been named as Britain’s greenest car, ahead of hybrid and electric models, in a report that has been described as “the most thorough environmental analysis of 2008’s new cars in the UK” by the environmental motoring website ‘What Green Car?’, which has chosen the Focus ECOnetic as its Green Car of the Year 2008.

The car achieves 65.6mpg combined and emits just 115g/km of CO2. Lancashire’s fleet manager Chris Malkin said: “This is a good sized car with low carbon emissions, delivers good fuel consumption and does not compromise on driving performance.”
