Starting salary £120,489 rising to £135,756*
(Plus £2,750 South East allowance, Company Vehicle and Relocation Expenses in line with Annex V of Police Regulations 35)

The Opportunity

We are seeking to recruit an Assistant Chief Constable to join our innovative and creative Chief Officer team. If you have enthusiasm, energy and commitment, along with the relevant professional skills and experience as detailed below, we want to hear from you.

We are looking for an inspirational and innovative leader who has a proven track record in senior police leadership with an exceptional operational background and passion for people.

If successful, you will deliver outstanding performance as set out by the Essex Police Force Plan and our mission to help people, keep people safe and catch criminals. You will develop and implement strategies that will support victims of crime, reduce violence, enhance our visibility in all communities and protect the most vulnerable within our society.

You will demonstrate a true commitment to developing a diverse, empowered and enthusiastic workforce which meets the needs of policing both now and in the future, while ensuring a strong public service ethos and an absolute commitment to fairness, integrity, diligence and impartiality.

  • Sound and all-round operational credibility with evidence of leading strategic delivery of an exceptional policing service, making sound decisions in a complex and challenging settings.

To be eligible to apply for this opportunity candidates must be:

  • A substantive Assistant Chief Constable or Chief Superintendent

  • Must have completed the Senior Police National Assessment Centre (SPNAC) and the Strategic Command Course (SCC) or the Police Leadership Programme: Stage 5 (Executive Leaders).

  • You are eligible if you are currently completing the Executive Leadership Programme (Cohort 3). Successful candidates offered a role with Essex Police, who have yet to complete the Executive Leadership Programme, will be offered a temporary appointment. This will become a substantive appointment, subject to performance and following successful completion of the Executive Leadership Programme.


Candidates must also complete the necessary management level vetting and security clearance checks required to attain the rank of Assistant Chief Constable before appointment.

In addition to the above criteria the successful candidate will be required to undertake the role of Force Gold Commander which includes undertaking Strategic Firearms Command (SFC) as part of the forces on call-arrangements. Any offer of appointment will be subject to the successful candidate holding/obtaining the required accreditation to perform these duties.

It is currently anticipated that the assessment process for this opportunity will be held during the week commencing 28th April and 5th May 2025.
