Lothian and Borders Police has appointed Mike McCormick as assistant chief constable. He will begin his new role in late October.

Mr McCormick spent the early years of his career in uniform at Dumfries and Galloway, followed by a period in CID. He has been involved with operational planning, recruiting and training, strategic planning, human resource management and has been a local liaison officer.

In 2000, Mr McCormick commanded police operations during the culmination of the trial of the men accused of the Lockerbie bombing, returning to Dumfries and Galloway as the head of traffic and communications.

The following year he secured a two-year post with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary for Scotland as a staff officer, working on force inspections, before moving back to Dumfries and Galloway to take on the role of divisional commander for the western half of the force.

In 2005 Mr McCormack was promoted to the rank of chief superintendent as head of operations.
