Police officers in the Isle of Man are to get new uniforms but the iconic white helmet which has become a recognised symbol of the Manx force, is staying.

As part of the new uniform, officers will be kitted out with black fleece tops, blouson-style fluorescent jackets and more functional trousers.

Additional changes include the re-introduction of flat caps for traffic officers and ties instead of cravats for female police officers.

The iconic white helmet, which has become an internationally recognised symbol of the Manx force, will remain.

Officers attending court will no longer wear traditional tunics – instead they will wear their operational uniform. They will, however, continue to wear tunics for ceremonial duties, such as on Tynwald Day.

Minister for Home Affairs Martyn Quayle MHK said: “The uniform has been changed to meet the operational demands of a modern police force whilst retaining the unique identity of the Isle of Man Constabulary.”

Deputy Chief Constable Gary Roberts added: “We have preserved the use of the white helmet, which is seen as being symbolic of the Isle of Man Constabulary. Maintaining our identity is crucially important.”
