Among the first to migrate from analogue to TETRA in 2003, the latest hand-held and vehicle radios will feature GPS to help improve officer safety and operational efficiency.
Insp James Trotter, Airwave technical manager at Cambridgeshire, said: Renewing our fleet of Sepura radios with the introduction of GPS is a huge step forward for us. It enables the rollout of APLS (automatic person location system) for all radio users. The health and safety of our staff is paramount, so that when an emergency button is pressed, an officers precise location can be instantly pinpointed to allow the deployment of rapid support.
GPS will also improve operational performance, by immediately identifying the most appropriate resource to respond swiftly to an individual incident.
In addition to the benefits of GPS, the new vehicle-based radios incorporate Gateway technology. This means that communications for all hand-held radios can be maintained when they are beyond the reach of network coverage, but are within range of vehicle coverage.
