A police forces latest recruit – a 10-week-old pup – has been officially named Rebel by a local school children. The German Shepherd is so popular that an on-line diary of his training regime saw an amazing 20,000 hits on the Tayside Police website in just one day.

The German Shepherd is so popular the force has received hundreds of emails from all over the world wishing him luck with his training. His on-line diary saw an amazing 20,000 hits on the Tayside Police website in just one day.
St Ninians Primary pupil Greg MacBain came up with the name for the forces up-and-coming canine crime fighter, a 10-week old German Shepherd puppy now dubbed Rebel.
Pupils competed to come up with a name for the dog, a graduate of the Lothian and Borders Police dog-breeding programme.
Constable Mike Keenan, the pups new handler, was presented with hundreds of names and after much consideration chose Rebel.
Today Mike presented the chuffed Greg with a book token and goodie bag.
Constable Keenan said, “Its fantastic that I can finally give him a name after weeks of just calling him puppy.
“Although hes still just a puppy Rebel is already showing all the signs of becoming a fantastic police dog. Hes very alert and headstrong, into everything.
“Id like to say a big thank you to all the pupils and staff at the school who have taken a special interest in Rebel.”
“We have been overwhelmed by the interest shown in Rebel,” said Constable Keenan. “Dog lovers from Australia to America have been in touch wishing him luck
