Police in Brixham are trialling an electric-powered cycle the first time one has been used by Devon and Cornwall.
The Power Cruiser can reach speeds of up to 20mph and travel around 30 miles using its 36-volt, 250-watt motor.
The environmentally friendly electric cycle costs little more than a standard pushbike and is being used by Neighbourhood Beat Manager PC Glenn Chambers.
PC Chambers, who normally uses a police push bike, said: The powered cycle will make it a lot easier to get around my patch and will be especially helpful up the steep hills. However, it still has all the benefits of riding a conventional bike, as I will still be visible in the same way to the residents of the area I serve.
