The £220 million security budget for London’s 2012 Olympic Games will rise sharply, as a result of the July 7 bombings.

A new assistant commissioner will be appointed by Scotland Yard who will have responsibility for security at the Games. To help the security services a new database is being compiled that includes highly detailed aerial photography in 3D of the Games’ venues. The database will enable officers to view each venue from any angle. The technology is being used to build security measures into each venue.

Sir Ian Blair, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said: “There can be no doubt the 2012 games, if the current threat scenario stays the same, will be a huge target and we have to understand that and work on that basis.”
