The Centre for Crime and Justice Studies and the Law School of King’s College London are to hold a one-day conference on Policing Transnational Crimes on May 18.

The event will focus on issues relating to organised, high-level and international criminal activity and attempt to raise the understanding of the transnational nature of the problem.

A spokesperson for Kings’ Law School said the conference “aims to increase the flow of knowledge and information by bringing together some leading experts in the field”. These will include:

  • SOCA’s Deputy Director Rob Wainwright,
  • Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Alan Brown,
  • Professor Ben Bowling of King’s College London,
  • Professor James Sheptycki of York University, Toronto,
  • Dr Peter Neumann, Centre for Defence Studies.

Speakers will give presentations on a diverse range of subjects such as:

  • The impact of the creation of SOCA,
  • Effects of international co-operation on domestic policing arrangements,
  • Issues surrounding governance and accountability

Workshops will cover further practical aspects of transnational policing such as people trafficking, drugs, firearms, terrorism and high-tech crime and will provide an excellent opportunity to identify areas of concern and share good practice.

“Success or failure in policing transnational crimes in an emerging criminal world without frontiers will be of huge significance for every law enforcement officer in Great Britain – and will depend a great deal on effective development of intelligence, skills and knowledge. This conference is a good place to start,” the spokesperson added.

The conference takes place at the Mermaid Conference Centre, Central London. For further information about the conference contact Sunita Patel on 0207 848 1688 or sunita.patel@kcl.ac.uk or download a booking form at www.kcl.ac.uk/ccjs.
