According to research carried out by E-Skills UK, the industry body that represents IT, contract and telecommunications employees, the gap between the salaries of those members living in the north and south of the country is widening.
IT workers in the north are paid roughly 35% less than those workers in the south in similar positions. This compares to a gap in pay of 33% reported in 2001.
The IT workforce in the north has been swelled by companies moving many of their back-office staff north of the border, but with no corresponding increase in salary. The Police Information Technology Office is relocating from London to Warrington, in the north-west, and the Cabinet Office IT department is also moving to a nearby location.
