The role of chief executive of the Forensic Science Service has been revealed to be one of the highest paid jobs in the Home Office.

Home Secretary Charles Clarke revealed the information in response to a written question from MP Mike Penning.

Mr Clarke said it would be inappropriate to reveal individual job holders and their salary details, but instead he identified the top ten highest paid posts in the Home Office.

Top of the list was perm-anent under secretary of state at between £130,000 to £264,250 pa. The FSS’s chief executive role commands between £93,139 to £198,197 pa which is the Senior Civil Service Payband 3.

Mr Clarke added that bonus payments are available to Home Office senior civil service jobholders, in accordance with guidance issued annually from Cabinet Office and ranged between £3,000 and £15,000.
