New mobile iris scanning system

Iris recognition can now be carried out on a person without them having to stop to have their eyes scanned, following the introduction of Iris On The Move® by the Sarnoff Corporation.

Iris on the Move means up to 20 subjects per minute can be recognised.

Subjects walk through a recognition portal at normal walking pace with no need to stop or perform any other action. Subjects need to keep their eyes open, look straight ahead, and, in some cases, remove their glasses.

“The Iris on the Move system is a breakthrough in this field. We can capture iris images in a minimally constrained environment; the subject can be moving and need only open their eyes and look forward as they walk through the recognition portal,” states Sarnoff’s Dr. James R. Matey.

Ease of Use — The system allows for greater flexibility in subject position and distances up to three meters from the imaging system.

High Throughput — Allows for up to 20 subjects per minute to walk through the recognition portal at a normal walking pace.

Flexibility of Design — The default configuration accommodates individuals from 5’3″ to 6’3″, yet independent modules can be integrated for easy expansion to customize the system based on specific needs including accessibility requirements. The system was designed to hand off captured imagery to any iris recognition algorithm.

Iris recognition is said to offer an extremely low false match rate because the pattern of the iris is unique to its owner and stable over an individual’s lifetime. It is non-invasive and more convenient and hygienic than other biometric identification systems.
