The kiosk is operated via three cash machine-like screens and offers personal and home safety advice, crime prevention advice, facts and figures on the Force and recruiting information. Details of counselling and third party organisations, for example Samaritans, Citizens Advice, debt counselling etc., are also available.
Members of the public can also use the facility in an emergency. A dedicated help button allows the public to contact the CCTV control room at Blochairn, where an operator can, via a two-way communication, deal with the caller, who will also be visible via nearby CCTV. They will then, if necessary, contact the police.
Chief Superintendent David Christie, city centre divisional commander, commented: The police box is an excellent addition to the policing of the city centre. It will not replace the officer on the beat, but will serve to enhance the high level of service already provided. Unlike a police officer, the box is static and therefore people will always know where they are able to access information and get help if required.
