HPD Scheme training modules

There are ten separate training modules involved in the High Potential Development scheme, enabling members of the scheme to tailor their own individual development programme.

The modules are as follows:

Leadership and Self

The only compulsory module, those taking part in the scheme must complete this before undertaking any others. Focusing on students personal and leadership style and interactions with others, the module aims include identifying studentsÂ’ own current strengths and areas for self-development in the context of leadership, and strategies for developing leadership capabilities.

Leadership and People

Most appropriate for officers who have experience of leading others, Leadership and People explores some of the theories of leadership and management (particularly transformational leadership) and their application in an operational policing environment. Module aims include enabling members to supervise and assess the performance of teams and individuals, to conduct intelligence driven briefings, and to measure their own behaviour against service values and organise own work effectively and develop own performance.

Management and Organisations

Developing the theories covered in the Leadership and People module, this module allows students to concentrate on management within the police service, including management of staff, organisational performance management, project management and change management. Module aims include to communicate proposed changes and effectively implement the change plan, to work with the community partners and other agencies to solve community problems, and to develop measures and criteria for evaluating and improving organisational performance.

Introduction to BCU Skills

Most appropriate for officers at (or soon to be) sergeant and inspector rank who plan to move into Basic Command teams within the short/ medium term, this module provides an introductory overview of the issues and skills required within a BCU team. Module aims include to assist HPDS delegates in developing an understanding of the roles and responsibilities within a BCU, and to examine performance measurement and the HMIC inspection process.

Crime and Policing Partnerships

Most appropriate for officers who are presently (or will shortly be) involved in the design, preparation and delivery of local or force crime and disorder strategies through consultation and partnership. This module explores the relationship between partnership working and crime and disorder strategies, and the use of intelligence in a partnership context. Module aims include managing tactical operations to support the delivery of force crime and disorder strategies, and using information and intelligence to support the achievement of crime reduction.

Critical Incident Command

Designed for any officer who aspires to the role of Silver Commander, this module is particularly suitable for those who are inspectors or about to be promoted to inspector, and concentrates on command and control structures. Module aims include to effectively manage the operational response to a pre-planned or emerging incident, and to assume overall command of pre-planned or emerging incidents.

Diversity

Covering a wide variety of diversity issues (including race, culture, disability, gender and sexuality), the module looks at how officers can, as leaders, impact upon these issues, specifically focusing on challenging attitudes and behaviour. Module aims include to promote equality, diversity and Human Rights in working practices, and to build and maintain community relations by providing a service that is responsive to the needs of all communities.

Effective Grievance Management

As well as touching on the ideology and policy, this module is very much geared to managing grievance in practice, and directs students towards the procedures and considerations to effectively deal with grievances within the police service. Module aims include to identify methods for investigating grievances with sensitivity, and in accordance with force grievance procedure, and to address disciplinary and unsatisfactory performance in line with fo
