Finsbury Park suspect charged with `terrorism-related murder`

Finsbury Park attack suspect Darren Osborne has been charged with terrorism-related murder and attempted murder after a van collided with pedestrians in London. Mr Osborne, 47, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) shortly after the incident outside Muslim Welfare House on Seven Sisters Road in the early hours of Monday (June 19). One man died and nine other people were taken to hospital after the vehicle struck worshippers attending Ramadan late-night prayers at the nearby mosque. A Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson said: “Today, the CPS authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Darren Osborne with terrorism related murder and attempted murder following the incident in Finsbury Park in the early hours of Monday, June1 9.” On Thursday, the MPS said it had not been previously certain whether father-of-six Makram Ali died of illness or as a result of the actions of a 47-year-old man who allegedly ploughed a large van into a crowd of worshippers leaving two London mosques following Ramadan prayers. Witnesses near the Finsbury Park attack say Mr Ali, 51, seemed to suffer a medical episode just before the attack. Mr Ali came to Britain from Bangladesh when he was just ten years old. In a touching tribute, his family described him as “a quiet, gentle man” who took comfort from “spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren”.
