Tyrone Muir, 47, was jailed for three years and two months at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday (19 October) after admitting his involvement in a burglary at the home of a vulnerable man in Lewisham.

The offence took place on 16 July, when three men forced their way through the victim’s front door before fleeing. Doorbell camera footage captured the break-in, but the victim was distressed and struggled to provide a detailed account of what had happened.

He was, however, able to recall one of the intruders shouting: “Come on, Tyrone, let’s go.”

PC Max Kelly, from the Met’s Territorial Support Group, focused on the name and began searching police records for potential matches in Lewisham. He then compared the suspects’ images with the doorbell footage and identified Muir as a potential match.

Officers obtained an address for Muir and set off to arrest him. While travelling there, PC Kelly spotted a man sitting on a bench around 10 minutes away.  Although Muir had changed his clothes and attempted to disguise himself, the officer recognised him and arrested him.

Muir, of Micheldever Road, Lewisham, was sentenced after pleading guilty to burglary at Woolwich Crown Court.

PC Kelly said: “It took time to trawl through all the potential matches, but I was determined to explore every avenue. When I matched Muir’s face to the man in the footage, I knew we had our suspect. I couldn’t believe it when I spotted him on the bench and swiftly arrested him.”

Chief Superintendent Chris Green said the burglary had been a distressing incident involving a vulnerable victim who may have been targeted because of his circumstances.

He praised the officer’s persistence in pursuing a small but significant clue, adding that the investigation demonstrated the importance of thorough police work in bringing offenders to justice.
