Met launches recruitment drive amid concerns over officer numbers

The Metropolitan Police Service has launched a new recruitment campaign as the force faces continued scrutiny over its officer numbers and capacity to police London.

The campaign features 24 serving officers and aims to attract recruits from across London’s communities, including people who may not previously have considered a career in policing.

The Met said the campaign would offer an insight into the realities of modern policing, highlighting both the challenges of the role and the skills required to serve the public.

Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said the force wanted to attract candidates with different backgrounds and experiences, emphasising the importance of integrity, compassion and resilience.

The campaign follows concerns about the number of officers available to police the capital. The Met has faced pressure over its ability to maintain neighbourhood policing while responding to crime and other demands on frontline resources.

The force said last year’s intake was the most inclusive in its history, with the latest campaign intended to build on that progress.

The starting salary for new constables is more than £43,000. Applicants can join through two main entry routes. The Police Constable Entry Programme combines training at a Met training centre with practical experience over two years, while the three-year Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship combines operational training with university study towards a degree in professional policing practice.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said a police service that reflected the capital’s communities was important for public confidence and trust.
