Sir Andy Marsh QPM appointed to lead HMICFRS

Sir Andy has been the Chief Executive of the College of Policing since September 2021. He was previously Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police (2016-2021) and Hampshire Constabulary (2013-2016). Sir Andy was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in 2018 and was knighted in 2024 for services to policing.

He succeeds Michelle Skeer OBE QPM, who was appointed to the role on an interim basis in April 2026.

Sir Andy said: “I am honoured to be appointed Chief Inspector at what is a pivotal moment for policing and fire and rescue. Throughout my career, I’ve seen the difference that independent inspection can make in helping to keep our communities safe.

“The inspectorate’s work is highly regarded but we can never be complacent. My immediate focus is on listening, so that I can understand what works well and what we might do even better.

“Policing is entering a period of significant change, and there are also important opportunities for reform across fire and rescue services. The inspectorate will be at the heart of that, playing a vital role in providing independent inspection to support improvement in the public interest.

“I’d like to thank Michelle Skeer for her leadership of HMICFRS since April. As I start my role at the inspectorate, I look forward to hearing from and meeting with many of you in the months ahead.”
