Cheshire Chief Constable Mark Roberts announces retirement
Cheshire Chief Constable Mark Roberts has announced he is to retire from policing after a 33-year career.
Roberts, who became chief constable of Cheshire Constabulary in 2021, made the announcement today (10 August).
He said he had hoped to remain in post until 2028, but “the decision has been made to take the force in a different direction”.
“For me, policing has been a vocation and privilege, and I am immensely proud of everything that I have achieved over the past 33 years,” Roberts said. He added that Cheshire was “very much at the top of its game” and that his departure would not stop the force’s work.
Roberts began his career as a police constable with Greater Manchester Police in 1993, later working in investigative roles including murder investigations and the Northwest Counter Terrorism Unit.
He became an assistant chief constable at Cheshire in 2014 before moving to South Yorkshire Police as deputy chief constable in 2017. He returned to Cheshire as chief constable in 2021.
Roberts has also served as the national policing lead for football since 2014, overseeing policing operations at major tournaments including the 2026 Fifa World Cup. Reflecting on his career, he said the “pinnacle” had been serving as chief constable of Cheshire. “I know this fantastic work will continue as the force moves forward,” he said.
