Essex deputy named as preferred candidate for chief constable role
Rachel Nolan, currently deputy chief constable of Essex Police, has been named as the preferred candidate to succeed BJ Harrington as the force’s next chief constable.
Mrs Nolan joined Essex Police as a constable in 1998 and has served at every rank within the force over more than 27 years. Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Roger Hirst described her as “the outstanding candidate” in a process that included an independent panel comprising HM Inspector of Constabulary Kathryn Stone and the chief executives of Essex County Council and the PFCC’s office.
Nolan said she was “thrilled and deeply proud” to be selected, adding that her focus would be on “prevention, protection and professionalism.”
The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Police, Fire and Crime Panel. A hearing date has yet to be announced.
Harrington, who has led Essex Police for eight years, will step down on her appointment.
