Northumbria Police mourns officer killed while attending crash
A Northumbria Police officer has died after being struck by a car while responding to a road traffic collision in Northumberland.
PC Jess Turnbull, 19, was attending a collision on the A189 Spine Road in Cramlington at around 11.10pm on Monday (June 8) when the incident occurred. She was taken to hospital with critical injuries but died on Wednesday surrounded by her family.
According to Northumbria Police, PC Turnbull was outside a marked police vehicle at the scene when she was struck by a black Mercedes CLC that was not connected to the original collision.
The officer had joined the force in September last year and worked on a response policing team in Northumberland.
Paying tribute, Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine described PC Turnbull as a “dedicated and committed officer” who always sought to keep her communities safe. She said: “Jess lost her life in the line of duty while serving and protecting our communities.”
A 73-year-old man was arrested following the incident. After PC Turnbull’s death, he was further arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail while enquiries continue.
Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is continuing its investigation and has appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage from the area.
