Former officer falsely claimed PIP, blue badge and council discount

A former Nottinghamshire Police officer would have been dismissed had he not resigned from the force after falsely claiming benefits he was not entitled to, a misconduct hearing has heard.

Former PC Adam Abid, who resigned in December 2025, was found to have made various claims for financial benefits from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) in relation to PIP payments. He also falsely claimed a blue badge from Derby City Council.

He had stated that his partner or family members drove him to and from work but in reality, Abid drove himself to work and did not need this benefit. He also drove a police vehicle whilst on duty, clocking up more than 150 miles between 5 September and 14 October 2023.

DWP finally terminated the officer’s PIP payments stating that he was not eligible.

He had also applied for a blue badge from Derby City Council. The hearing heard how Abid provided false information when he made that application, including that he was unable to drive and that his partner had to drive him to work.

He also contacted the council and stated that he was the sole occupier at his home address and requested a 25 percent single occupier discount. This was untrue as he was living with his partner at the time, the hearing heard.

Nottinghamshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate carried out a thorough investigation and the officer offered no explanation into why he falsely claimed these benefits.

The misconduct hearing was held in private on January 13, so not to prejudice any pending criminal proceedings. This matter has now been dealt with by the affected agencies and the hearing can now be published. It found the former PC had breached standards of professional behaviour which included honesty and integrity and discreditable conduct.

Temporary Chief Constable Steve Cooper said: “The behaviour demonstrated by this former officer was deliberate and carried out solely for financial gain. His despicable behaviour goes against all the high values we hold as an organisation. If he had not resigned, he would have been dismissed from the force immediately. He will now be placed on the police barred list.”
