Ms Shiner retired as Sussex Police chief constable on August 31 and has now rejoined the force after a short break under the Retire and Rejoin scheme.

The scheme is open to all police officers in England and Wales regardless of rank and is designed to retain skills, knowledge and experience.

The Police and Crime Panel endorsed the reappointment of Ms Shiner as chief constable following a recommendation from the PCC.

Ms Bourne said: “I am delighted that the Sussex Police and Crime Panel unanimously supported my proposed reappointment of Ms Jo Shiner to the position of chief constable for Sussex Police at their meeting on Friday (September 27).

“In my recommendation to panel members I stressed the importance of continuity of strong and proven leadership and the need to retain experienced senior officers of the highest calibre.

“The panel had no hesitation in unanimously supporting my proposal to offer Ms Shiner the opportunity to rejoin Sussex Police until August 2027 under the nationally approved Retire and Rejoin scheme.”
