Officers injured during disorder in Hartlepool linked to Southport incident
Cleveland Police has made eight arrests following a violent protest in Hartlepool on Wednesday evening (July 31) that the force believes was linked to the incident in Southport earlier this week.
Officers – including support from neighbouring forces – had missiles, glass bottles and eggs thrown at them, with several requiring hospital treatment for their injuries, during the disorder on Murray Street at around 6pm.
Speaking on Wednesday night, Chief Superintendent David Sutherland said: “We currently have a high policing presence while officers respond to disorder that is taking place in Hartlepool following a protest that began this evening.
“At this stage we believe the protest is in connection with the incident in Southport earlier this week.
“Our officers are facing missiles, glass bottles and eggs being thrown at them and have made arrests as they remain in the area to protect the safety of those living in the community.”
Cleveland Police confirmed on Thursday that the disorder in Hartlepool “has now been ended and all roads are open”.
“Eight arrests were made during the evening relating to public order offences,” the force said.
“A full criminal investigation is under way and we expect further arrests to be made in the coming days.
“We understand that these events will have been hugely concerning to our communities and we want to reassure people that the actions of those involved will be dealt with to bring those responsible to justice.
“In the meantime there will remain a visible police presence in the area.”
Cleveland Police Federation chair Paul Crowley said: “The disorder seen in Hartlepool last night was utterly deplorable and saw several officers requiring hospital treatment for their injuries.
“Police officers should never have to face such brutality, and every officer deserves to go home safely to their families without fear of suffering serious injury or worse.
“I condemn these disgraceful acts of mindless violence, and we will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice.
“The Cleveland Police Federation will continue to support all officers involved, including those from neighbouring forces.”
Cleveland police and crime commissioner (PCC) Matt Storey said: “The appalling scenes last night in Hartlepool were totally unacceptable and I would like to thank Cleveland Police officers and staff for how they handled the incident and their bravery in what was a very dangerous situation.
“Those responsible for last night’s offences must face the full force of the law and be held accountable for their actions.
“For people to use a tragedy as an excuse for mindless disorder is unacceptable. These individuals do not represent the people of Cleveland and their message of violence does not reflect the communities of Hartlepool.
“As PCC I reject any and all prejudice and discrimination. Violence and fear will never be stronger than the solidarity of the people of Cleveland.
“I understand from the chief constable that additional community reassurance patrols will be undertaken and any further disorder will be swiftly dealt with.
“I’m pleased to see the communities affected have already come together to raise funds, rebuild and recover from last night’s disorder. That’s the spirit of the Hartlepool I know.”
