Detective Constable Jashwinder Jas Singh, aged 48, who is based in Bradford District, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates Court on Tuesday (July 2) where he was given a four-month custodial sentence suspended for 20 months. The requirements of the suspended sentence order are that he must carry out up to 20 days of rehabilitation activity and 60 hours unpaid work.

The charges relate to repeated breaches of a non-molestation order between February 2023 and February 2024. The breaches all occurred while Det Con Singh was off duty.

Detective Chief Superintendent Nicola Bryar, head of West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate, said: “Det Con Singh was told the terms of this civil order, which included not communicating directly with the victim or entering the boundary of her home address.

“He has repeatedly engaged in behaviour in breach of this order, including committing offences while already under investigation by the Professional Standards Directorate.

“This pattern of behaviour is completely unacceptable and has understandably caused significant distress to the victim. I hope that this case demonstrates to victims that we will pursue police perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“Det Con Singh is currently suspended from duty and will now be subject to misconduct proceedings.”

Another serving West Yorkshire detective constable is due in court charged with misconduct in public office.

Detective Constable Wasim Bashir, 54, is alleged to have contacted vulnerable victims of serious sexual offences or domestic abuse during the course of his duties between August 1, 2019, and January 5, 2022, without any identified policing purpose.

He is also alleged to have begun a sexual relationship with one of the victims.

Following a directed Independent Office for Police Conduct

The allegations were investigated by West Yorkshire’s Counter Corruption Unit, under the direction and control of the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

On conclusion of the investigation in October 2023, a file of evidence was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service, which authorised the charges.

Bashir is due to appear before Hull Magistrates Court on Wednesday (July 3).

West Yorkshire Police said he has been suspended from duty since his arrest.
