Former MPS officer has misconduct proven following hearing
A former officer whose racist remarks to a colleague were played out to a meeting would have been dismissed should he have still been serving.
Former PC Thomas Murray, who was attached to the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, was found to have breached the standards of professional behaviour in respect of authority, respect and courtesy and equality and diversity.
On 8 September 2022, PC Murray sent a voice note containing racially discriminatory remarks to a colleague.
At the time he received it, his colleague was attending a positive action seminar on Microsoft Teams. The seminar offered advice and support for under-represented groups thinking of applying for internal promotion.
As his mic was unmuted when he played the message, it was heard over the audio by all of those attending.
A panel, led by an independent chair, found that former PC Murray would have been dismissed should he still have been serving.
Commander Simon Messinger, in charge of PaDP, said: “There is no place in the Met for people who have these types of views and attitudes and I am pleased that the actions of this former officer have now been dealt with. “We have been making significant changes to improve the culture with PaDP, including a new leadership team and strengthened supervision of officers.
“There can be no doubt around the high standards expected of officers and staff across the Met and we will continue to identify those who do not adhere to these values and work to dismiss them from the organisation.”
The officer resigned from the MPS in October 2023. Murray will now be added to the Barred List held by the College of Policing.
