Acting president of Police Superintendents’ Association elected
Superintendent Nick Smart of West Yorkshire Police has been elected acting president Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA) following the retirement of Chief Superintendent Paul Fotheringham last week.
He will serve in the post until the formal election of a president and vice-president in January 2024, who will each begin a three-year term.
Supt Smart, who was elected at a meeting of the association’s National Executive Committee (NEC) this week, is a district chair for the PSA. He was chair of West Yorkshire Police Federation branch for four years, during which time he spearheaded the ‘protect the protectors’ campaign and led work around legislation on assaults on emergency services workers.
He was promoted to the rank of superintendent in 2018, and has carried out a variety of operational roles in force, and in corporate projects. He has been a tactical firearms commander and is a silver public order commander.
Supt Smart said: “I look forward to supporting the work of the association over the next few months before a president is elected by our NEC.
“The national team is carrying out excellent work on behalf of members and the wider service, which I will seek to support and further influence as much as possible.
“I would like to formally thank Paul for everything he has done for the PSA over the last 18 months and wish him all the best in his retirement.”
In line with association rules, all members of the association have been eligible to put themselves forward for the position of president and vice-president, beginning a three-year term in March 2024. Both will be elected by the PSA’s NEC in January.
