West Yorkshire Police said officers had attempted to stop the vehicle on the M62 eastbound as it entered the Humberside area at 11.24pm on Friday (September 3).

The force said as a result of this there was a collision between the car and two police vehicles.

“One of the police vehicles left the carriageway and was in collision with a bridge stanchion,” it added.

“A police officer suffered serious leg injuries as a result and he was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but non-life threatening condition.”

West Yorkshire Police said four people from the non-police vehicle were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences and have since been released on bail. Three of them were injured – one suffered neck and back injuries and two others suffered minor injuries.

Another two people were arrested on suspicion of falsely reporting a car stolen. They have also been released on bail.

Due to the nature of the incident the force said it has notified the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The M62 eastbound, between junctions 34 and 35, was closed for some time as an investigation was carried out.
