Hampshire officer suffers multiple stab wounds after attending welfare call
A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an officer from Hampshire Constabulary was stabbed multiple times while attending a concern for welfare call in Southampton.
The office attended an address on Portswood Road just after midday on Thursday (October 15) after concerns were raised about the wellbeing of a man living there.
The officer was stabbed several times receiving injuries that are serious but not life-threatening. A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said his family has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
A 51-year-old man from Southampton was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.
Investigations into the exact circumstances of the incident are ongoing.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Brown said: “Our thoughts are very much with the officer and his family at this time. “We have a man in custody arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and we progressing the investigation, carrying out inquiries, conducting house to house visits and scoping CCTV opportunities.
Zoe Wakefield, Chair of Hampshire Police Federation, said: “We are supporting the officer and his family, as well as other colleagues involved in this horrific incident. The officer has sustained significant injuries and it is by pure chance that it is not more serious. We wish him a swift recovery.
“This is a reminder – not that we need it – of the dangers our officers face every day and how brave they are in dealing with those intent on inflicting this level of violence against them. There is an ongoing investigation so it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”
