New deputy PCC for Notts will tackle sexual and domestic violence
A working magistrate and regional director of the Labour Party has been named as the deputy police and crime commissioner (PCC) for Nottinghamshire.
The appointment of Emma Foody was confirmed on June 1 at a virtual hearing of the police and crime panel, chaired by PCC Paddy Tipping.
A key part of her role will be to find new strategies to reduce levels of domestic and sexual violence throughout the area.
Mr Tipping said: “Although we have always provided a strong response in support of those affected by domestic abuse, I will be launching a new enhanced plan in the autumn. Emma’s previous experience means that she is ideally placed to lead in this area of work. I will also be introducing a new package of initiatives to address sexual violence and Emma will take over responsibility for the successful delivery of these new projects.
“In addition, it’s clear that the criminal justice system is facing a challenging period. It is important that PCCs have a clear and informed voice regarding the way forward so Emma’s hands-on experience as a magistrate will prove invaluable.”
Mr Tipping said it is expected that as the country moves into Covid-19 recovery phase, it is likely the workload for PCCs will increase, including a requirement at national level.
“I am determined that Nottinghamshire is well-represented at all levels and to ensure that, I needed to increase the capacity of my office,” he added, “As my deputy, Emma will support me in my work for our local communities, which will enable me to undertake more work for Nottinghamshire on national platforms.”
Ms Foody has extensive stakeholder, voluntary sector and criminal justice experience and has also worked for the National Housing Federation and the North East Ambulance Service.
She said: “I am delighted to have been appointed deputy PCC for Nottinghamshire. I look forward to using my skills and experience to work to eradicate sexual and domestic violence in all forms across the city and county. It is a devastating crime that can destroy lives and I am so pleased Paddy Tipping and Nottinghamshire Police are treating the issue with the severity it deserves.”
