Essex Police has appointed a temporary second in command after losing its deputy chief constable to the National Crime Agency (NCA).
Commander Ben-Julian Harrington, also known as BJ, will join the force on secondment from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS).
Mr Harrington replaces Matthew Horne, who was appointed director general (operations) at the NCA in February, initially on secondment.
Having spent his entire 26-year career with the MPS working in a number of territorial and specialist operational roles including serving as a silver commander for Londons Olympic Games in 2012, Mr Harrington was previously commander for north London, covering the boroughs of Barnet, Harrow, Ealing, Brent, Camden and Islington.
He currently holds responsibility for public order policing and emergency preparedness across London.
Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh said: BJ Harrington is an outstanding operational leader who has worked on some of Londons biggest public order challenges, such as large-scale demonstrations and major public occasions.
During his interview, BJ demonstrated his commitment to the values of Essex Police and, as importantly, to keeping our countys communities safe. He will bring to Essex a wealth of experience and operational knowledge and I look forward to working with him.
Mr Harrington will join Essex Police in April or early May.
