Greater Manchester Polices Rochdale division issued a fake post warning on social media to inform the public that a message circulating on Facebook was trying to misinform them.
The original post featured an image of actors Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern known for playing the Wet Bandits in the Home Alone movies claiming they were local thieves who had been casing properties in the run-up to Christmas.
It was captioned: These two men are going around Littleborough, knocking on doors, claiming to be from United Utilities and asking for entry to your home to check your taps for possible leaks!
DO NOT let them in, they ARE NOT from United Utilities!!!
PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FRIENDS AS THEY ARE DANGEROUS!!!
Home Alone and its 1992 sequel stars Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, who must defend his home from a pair of bumbling burglars played by Stern and Pesci.
The fictional crooks are shown infiltrating houses by posing as police officers before robbing them, plugging the sinks and leaving the taps running.
The force said: This post is fake the males are the Wet Bandits from the Home Alone films.
However we do stress that you always ask for identification before allowing anyone into your home IF YOU ARE NOT SURE, DONT LET THEM.
