The second round of the College of Policing’s direct entry scheme will see nine forces advertise candidates to join the service at superintendent rank.

The programme looks for experienced leaders from the private, public and third sectors to join policing without having served at any other rank.

Last year’s scheme saw seven forces participate, with nine candidates recruited, five by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), two by Avon and Somerset Constabulary and one each by North Yorkshire Police and City of London Police. Sussex Police appointed a candidate who withdrew after a clearing process.

The recruits are currently undergoing training with their forces and the College of Policing.

Candidates put forward by British Transport Police did not meet the required standard, while West Yorkshire Police did not support any of its applicants to attend the national assessment centre.

Both forces declined to take part in this year’s recruitment process.

Hampshire Constabulary, Leicestershire Police, Suffolk Constabulary, Sussex Police and Thames Valley Police are accepting applications this year.

The MPS is also looking to take on between five and ten people, while Hertfordshire Constabulary, Cambridgeshire Constabulary and Bedfordshire Police will take on one recruit between them.

Direct entry lead for the College of Policing, Chief Superintendent Nicola Dale, said the programme allows whole new ways of thinking and innovation into policing.

“We’re looking for exceptional candidates who have experience working in another sector so they can bring a different perspective into the service,” she said.

Applications close on March 6, 2015. Successful candidates will then be invited to a three-day assessment at the National Assessment Centre in late May.
