The police and crime commissioner (PCC) for the largest geographical force in England and Wales has announced his preferred candidate for the role of chief constable is an assistant chief constable in Gwent.

Simon Prince was selected by Dyfed-Powys PCC Christopher Salmon following an interview and assessment process last week. He beat two other candidates to the role, including current temporary chief constable Jackie Roberts, who will revert to her previous role as deputy.

Mr Prince, who lives with his wife and daughter in Powys, joined Gwent Police in 1990 and has served all 22 years of his policing career in South Wales. He commands the joint firearms unit covering Dyfed-Powys, Gwent and South Wales Police, and in 2007 he was in charge of the largest restructuring programme in Gwent’s history.

Mr Prince said: “I am delighted to have been selected as the PCC’s preferred candidate and I look forward to working with him.

“This is an exciting opportunity to join and lead Dyfed-Powys Police to protect the public and to further improve the service that our communities expect and deserve.”

Mr Salmon, who will put his choice to the police and crime panel on March 8, praised the standard of the candidates who applied, adding he had high hopes for Mr Prince.

“The calibre of candidates was very high and I have been impressed with the contributions of all,” he said.

“I am confident that he will bring strong leadership to Dyfed-Powys Police. His enthusiasm and ability to develop new ideas and innovative solutions will be essential to steer the force effectively through future challenges. I look forward to working with Simon as chief constable for Dyfed-Powys Police to deliver a policing service that is responsive to community needs.”
